Bunny's Knit Nightie

This is Bunny's Knit Nightie by Children's Corner.

I love that it makes a useful, but still sweet, gift!

I can just imagine cute little baby feet curled up inside the elasticized hem.

The hem may also simply be hemmed, and left completely open.

The shoulders overlap, creating the neck opening.

This allows for easy construction, with no plackets or openings.

It also means ease of dressing baby, and no lumps or bumps to irritate soft skin.

I used an Oliver + S knit by Moda Fabrics.

The print is larger in scale, but still delicate.

Another feature of the pattern that I appreciate, is construction with a regular sewing machine. No need for a serger.

Pattern instructions include suggested settings for stitch length and width.

The seams are stitched with a narrow and elongated zig zag, allowing them to stretch with the knit fabric.

Seam edges are then finished with a zig zag, too.

Neck and sleeve edges are turned under and zig zagged.

The folded edge is also zig zagged, creating little scallops.

This is one place where I do usually deviate slightly from the printed instructions.

The instructions suggest using an overcast foot, such as the one on the right, for the decorative edge stitching. For my Viking machine, the "J" foot on the right is the overcast foot.

When used, the fabric edge is usually lined up with the thin vertical wire. The needle will then zig zag back and forth across this wire. The purpose of the wire, is to prevent the edge of the fabric from tunneling or rolling during stitching.

My experience has been that it also seems to prevent the little scallop from forming.

I use a regular sewing foot, such as the "A" foot pictured on the left. This is also the foot I use to stitch the seams.

I often find that I need to increase my tension, as well. I then use a zig zag lenth of 3.0 and a width of 4.5. The zig needs to be on the fabric, and the zag just off the edge, to create the little scallop.

I do use the overcast foot to zig zag the gown's seam allowances to finish them.

Every machine is a little different, so testing stitch settings and different feet is a good thing!

The pattern also includes a little hat, knotted at the top, and a bib, booties and blanket.

I am off to the dentist again today.

It seems to be a weekly thing around here lately!

Yesterday's agenda included embellishing and monogramming a few burp cloths for a sweet new baby. As the day unfolded, it became the only thing on the agenda. During several moments, I was the one doing some serious spitting, sputtering and fuming!

It has been awhile since I used the embroidery feature of my sewing machine, and it evidently decided to teach me a thing or two. Or, at least test my patience.

I am not one to upgrade each time a new machine is introduced. My Husqvarna Viking Designer I still uses those obsolete things called floppy disks to transfer the design from the computer to the machine. That means plugging an external disk drive into the computer, since my computer no longer even accepts floppy disks. We evidently replace computers more often than sewing machines around here!

After finally getting everything set up, or so I thought, all I received were error messages.

The thought occurred to read the instructions. Maybe I had forgotten some important step.

After digging through my sewing room, finding many other treasures in the process, I ultimately found the user's guide to my embroidery software.

No enlightment there.

A call to my dealer provided no clues, either.

Except to shell out several hundred dollars for new software.

No, I don't think so.

The search for the user's guide also provided the embroidery software CD.

At that point, what did I have to lose?

I decided to remove the software from my computer, and reinstall it.

Don't ask me why, but it worked!

It only took six hours, five cans of Diet Coke (the sixth drink, if needed, would definitely have been something much stronger), one bag of Ghirardelli Sea Salt Soiree dark chocolate squares, and two broken fingernails.
But, the monogram was finally transferred to a floppy and headed toward my machine!

In the end, there are three monogrammed burp cloths!

Today, I am off to one of my least favorite destinations: the dentist.

I actually like my dentist and all his office staff. They are almost like family.

I am just not fond of the pain sometimes incurred.

After yesterday, I am thinking a day of drilling is nothing.

I am pretty sure no fingernails will be broken while sitting in a chair.

And please, let's just keep my Diet Coke and chocolate addiction between us.

That is not something he really needs to hear.

This is Lizzy, a new pattern from Bonnie Blue Designs.

I used a raspberry and pink floral from Fabric Finders.

While I love this fabric, it does make the design features of the pattern a little more difficult to discern in the photographs. They are more visible in real life!

This is the dress with sleeves version. I love the little gathered cap sleeves!

There is also a sleeveless version that may be worn as a jumper or dress.

I planned on using white pique for the yoke.

However, by the time I cut it out, I must have forgotten!

When I finally made it to my sewing machine with the pieces, I had cut them all from the floral fabric. So, I plowed ahead!

Beneath the narrow yoke, is a center box pleat with two more pleats on either side. These are all topstitched for a few inches, before releasing into soft gathers.

Again, the busier floral print does not allow all the details to be seen.

This style is great for those who are not crazy about full gathered skirts.

The pattern is sized to 8 years, and the pleated skirt is a more contemporary silhouette the older girls would probably like.

The dress buttons down the full length of the back, making it very simple to sew.

There are two pleats, repeating those of the front, on each side of the back.

I used floral shaped raspberry buttons, which seem to almost disappear in these photographs.

When I am sewing a pattern for the first time, I tend to sew it as the pattern shows.

In my personal sewing, that is probably not what I would do. I would be adding my own mark to it with favorite techniques or embellishments.

However, many of my customers will stitch it as the pattern shows.

I believe I must have had that experience also, in order to better assist them.

As I was constructing this little dress, I thought of things I would probably do differently.

I do believe the addition of piping along the yoke and skirt seam would help to create a more finished look. With this type of print, it would also help to break some of the busy floral design.

I might also add piping to highlight the square neckline.

As part of the general instructions included in most Bonnie Blue Designs patterns, there are excellent instructions on how to make and apply piping. So it is something that any seamstress could easily attempt with this pattern.

The pattern illustration does show ribbon applied across the yoke of the jumper, with a bow at center front. That would be another option for adding embellishment and a dressmaker touch.

However, in the smaller sizes, the yoke is 2" or less.

Adding ribbon to this size 2, seemed to take too much room on the yoke and throw things a little out of proportion. I think piping or another small trim along the seamline would be better for the smallest sizes.

When using a light to medium weight fabric, I would also add a lightweight interfacing to the yoke. The interfacing might not be as necessary if corduroy, denim or a heavier twill was used.

I did topstitch around the neckline. I felt it would help reinforce the square corners and the overall finished look.

I do really love the sleeve!

This style is also a little more contemporary, and may appeal to more people than a traditional puffed sleeve.

I also appreciate the fact that it is lined, lending to a very finished look.

One fun thing, which the pattern suggests, is using a coordinating print for the lining.

With so much white background in this print, the ginghams, plaids or stripes that I auditioned for lining shadowed through too much. So, I just used white broadcloth.

By the time I was constructing the sleeves, I did decide the dress needed a little something extra. So, I added green rick rack at the edge of the sleeves.

The pattern instructions have the sleeves applied flat, before stitching the underarm and sides seams. I prefer to attach my sleeves in the round.

After applying the rick rack, and stitching the lining and outer sleeve together along the bottom edge, I flattened the lining and outer sleeve. The underarm seam was stitched in one pass, beginning at the lining underarm seam and ending at the outer sleeve underarm seam. I then folded the lining to the inside, exposing the rick rack and pressed. Gathering stitches were stitched along the upper edges and the sleeve was applied to the dress in the round, with the skirt side seams already finished in tiny french seams. This results in no visible raw edges of the underam seam within the sleeve. With the french seams in the skirt, there are no exposed raw edges there, either. Especially since the sleeve is lined, I feel this step makes them look even better.

Overall, I really like this pattern. Next time, I will probably add piping and maybe a few other touches to add even more to the sweet design features. I also think it would be fun to try an all white heirloom version, maybe with softly gathered lace around the neck and armholes. It could be sweet for Easter or summer beach portraits!

Miscellaneous Monday

Thank you for the many gentle thoughts on our recent loss.

We are still adjusting to life without our furry friend.

My husband misses him most in the mornings, when they would stroll through the neighborhood. I miss him most in the evenings, when I am often home alone.

Now, the great debate rages on whether or not to acquire a new four footed family member.

It is the first time in our 28.5 year marriage that we have not had a dog.

Bluff was my husband's miniature schnauzer when we married. I had to pass his approval before we could even date!

Next came Dizzy. He was a rather difficult Dalmation. After moving to a home in the inner city, I felt the need to have a dog that offered a little more protection. Bluff remained inside, while Dizzy mostly patrolled the backyard. Dizzy managed to contribute to his own demise by eating everything in sight, including his water and food bowls, toys, bedding, pecans (shells and all) when they dropped from the trees, the roof of his doghouse, and most anything that would fit in his mouth. He was a beautiful dog, but not very smart.

Shortly afterwards, Bounce bounded into our lives to patrol and protect our home and yard.

He was an Airedale terrior who never realized just how big he really was. He would see our smaller dogs sitting in our laps, and believe that he could do the same.

He slipped and slid on our hardwood floors with huge paws, keeping me on my toes as I rushed to catch and save anything breakable in his path.

My husband is probably the one person to visit the dentist and come home with a dog, instead of the usual complimentary toothbrush and toothpaste sample.

That is how we acquired Blitz, our second miniature schnauzer.

Blitz was the most laid back dog ever. Doorbells never phased him, and were unworthy of a bark. Toys were to look at, sniff and then ignore. He loved to be held or sit on your feet, but wet puppy kisses were not his thing.

Our young son decided Blitz needed someone to teach him the finer points of playing and puppy kisses.

So, Rambo entered our lives and hearts.

He never managed to teach Blitz to enjoy toys, or give those wet kisses. Instead, he assumed those roles, and we seem a little lost without him and them.

I often receive inquiries on the source of poems and sayings I share in the Blessings posts.

Many of them come from books on the shelves in our library. When we built this house, the trend was to include a home office. We went a different route and built a library. The room also houses my childhood piano and my mother-in-law's childhood rocking chair. I featured the sweet needlepoint cushion she made for it here. She also stitched the needlepoint which now covers the piano bench.

Recently, a reader inquired specifically about this poem.

Unfortunately, I have no additional information on its origin or author. I first found it in a book of poetry gifted by a family member.

I try to always give credit to the author or origin of writings. I have even conducted internet searches for the source of some, before they are used.

I was unable to reply to this reader personally, due to the fact they left no email address and are a no-reply reader.

I hope they read this entry, or return to the original post and read my reply.

This is my latest addiction!

I evidently missed all the commotion and fanfare when it first began hitting more grocery shelves and blogs last year.

Some say it is an alternative to peanut butter, but I would never put the two in the same class.

I enjoy peanut butter, but love this! A tablespoon contains fewer calories than peanut butter, and seems a little more healthy overall. It is also safe for those with nut allergies.

My favorite indulgence is smearing a little on crisp apple slices.

After the holidays, I always find it a little difficult to return to more healthy eating. A juicy apple, with a little dab of this, seems to satisfy my sweet tooth without too much harm to the hips.

I found my jar at World Market, but believe it can be found other places, too.

You never did learn the command of "sit and stay", but you will stay forever in our hearts.

Have Iron, Will Travel

Last week, I received a package from a sewing friend.

Upon first glance, I thought it was a very cute tote.

Then, I realized it had a specific purpose.

It is an iron caddy!

You know all those times that you need to take an iron to a sewing class, stitching retreat or

guild workshop?

Your iron fits safely inside the padded tote, when buttoned.

As each side is unbuttoned,

it becomes your own portable ironing pad!

The inside features silver heat resistant fabric.

Pretty darn nifty!

She used the pattern found here, which can also be ordered in sizes to accommodate smaller craft and travel irons.

If your sewing area and iron share space in multi-purpose rooms, it would also be a great place to keep your iron safely tucked away.

I think my friend may have known the colors of my sewing room, as this one coordinates so well. I may let my iron live in it, even when not traveling!

The sweet ladybug buttons hold a special meaning to our friendship.

Sewing friends and surprises are such a blessing!

Christmas Wishes

The past few weeks, blogs, Pinterest and FaceBook have been filled with images of the perfect Christmas.

Maybe those really do exist in some lives, but not necessarily in mine or those of many friends.

If there is an empty chair at your family dinner table this year, and you are missing someone special,

you have known the gift of love.

If the stockings and the tree are a little more bare than previous years,

you have known the gift of prosperity and security --

something many will never experience.

If you no longer hear the pitter patter of little feet

and grown children spend the holidays with in-laws and others,

Comfort Food - Biscuits

Sometimes we all need something to comfort us on gloomy days.

The gloom may be in the form of chilly or rainy weather.

It may be a case of sniffles that you just cannot shake.

It may be missing family and friends as holidays grow near.

It may be the ache in your heart when a friend loses her battle against cancer.

My comfort food is warm buttered bread, and lately I have needed a lot of it.

The recipe for 7-Up Biscuits has been popping up all over blogs and Pinterest lately.

Having all the ingredients, I decided to give them a try.

Now, some of you may cringe since the ingredients include Bisquick.

Just bear with the rest of us who often rely on quick and easy!

I used the recipe found here.

The ingredients were things already stocked in my pantry or refrigerator.

I was halfway to soothing my soul!

I find baking helps soothe the soul. The house seems a little warmer. The air fills with delicious aromas. The world slows just a little.

As the recipe states, this is a sticky dough.

On the initial try, it was a really, really sticky dough!

My first attempt resulted in more drop, than cut, biscuits.

They were still hot, yummy and comforting.

On the second attempt, I added a few more spoonfuls of Bisquick to the dough.

Instead of just dusting my pastry mat, I coated it with a substantial layer of the mix.

That allowed me to scrape the dough from the bowl, more easily turn it a couple of times on the mat, then cut the biscuits.

The addition of sour cream makes these very moist, and the 7-Up adds to the fluffiness.

With the butter in the bottom of the baking dish, there is really no need for additional butter.

Although, who can ever resist adding just a bit?

More Imaginary Sewing

This is a peek at my current sewing project:
a version of Rose, the latest pattern from Children's Corner.

I selected a large size gingham in hunter green, accented with red piping and buttons.

It is approximately three-fourths constructed, but a cold has zapped me of sewing energy.

I also discovered that sneezing and watery eyes do not help with sewing straight seams!

So, we will do a little imaginary sewing while waiting for the medicine to kick in and the sneezing fits to pass.

While I still love the traditional Christmas colors of red, green and white, it is also fun to play with some of the more trendy color schemes. Turquoise and red have always been a favorite combination of mine, and they are showing up more and more in holiday decorations and fashion.

This turquoise houndstooth in a brushed cotton would be cozy and warm for the winter months. I can definitely see it smocked, embroidered or appliqued with jolly red Santas!

To extend the wear beyond the holidays, a winter themed smocking plate is perfect!

The snow and evergreen trees in this design by Little Memories lend a bit of holiday feel, but could easily be worn well beyond the holidays. Turquoise and pink or always a fun combination!

We cannot forget the boys, either!

I think turquoise can be a fun color for little guys, too.

By changing the floss colors from pink and lavender to deeper and more "manly" colors, you can achieve a completely different look.

I hope sudden winter storms and colds have not sidelined too many of you.

I plan to be back at my machine and visiting here more often, once I quit reaching for a tissue every few minutes. Thanks for joining me in some imaginary sewing in the meantime!

From Texas to Tennessee, and back!

We took a trip!

We were gone for five days, crossed four states, and traveled over 1500 miles.

I never took one photograph.

So, does that mean we did not have fun or there was nothing beautiful, delicious or interesting to photograph?

Quite the opposite.

I guess I was just having too much fun, enjoying too much delicious food and company, and too busy to take the time and capture it in photographs.

Instead, there are memories and images etched upon my heart that will last forever.

Unfortunately, that doesn't provide much for me to share here.

We visted a dear elderly friend. The kind of visit your mind knows may be your last. Your heart hopes there will be many more.

We shared meals with family members, and caught up on their latest news.

My husband reconnected with law school classmates.

We ditched diets and dined at fabulous restaurants, enjoying every delicious morsel.

We hugged our son, and hugged him some more!

We familiarized ourselves with his new surroundings.

I recognized happiness and excitement in his face and voice, beneath the signs of too little sleep from the fast pace of first year law school.

We returned home.

Those of you who know me well, also know I would have preferred to stay there.

This Texas girl would gladly become a Tennessee gal.

Except, I am very proud of and excited for our Texas Rangers!

That is where I will be tonight -- cheering them on and hoping for a World Series win!

Next trip, I really will try to take photographs!

One More Year!

Another year older;

A warm pear buckle with fig compote and homemade vanilla ice cream was the perfect ending to dinner, with my sweet husband, at Jasper's.

Unfortunately, phone cameras and dim restaurant lighting do not make for delightful photos!

The dress that was not,

is not, and may not be made!

I had a plan.
I had the fabric, smocking plate and trim.

I was not completely committed to a pattern, but was narrowing it down.

With a little tweaking of floss colors, I was envisioning a cute little brown and white polka dot

back-to-school dress. It would be smocked with an apple design and trimmed with lime green rick rack or piping.

I blinked, school had started and we were headed toward October.

Thus, Plan B was born!

So many cute Autumn, Halloween and Thanksgiving designs from which to choose!
Replace that apple with a happy pumpkin, plump turkey or silly scarecrow.

Substitute orange for the lime green, and it was full steam ahead.

Except, I ended up cleaning out closets and a zillion other things.

Knowing my slow pace of picture smocking, I may not squeeze this one out by the time the menu calls for turkey and pumpkin pie.

I may be headed back to a twist on the original color scheme.
Brown is the color of reindeer, and at least one has a very shiny red nose! A great color combination!

Lime green has become a very popular replacement for the traditional Christmas green.

Several holiday plates could easily be tweaked to incorporate it.

Not to mention, the brown polka dots remind me of snowflakes falling, and there are also plates with winter themes and winter animals - polar bears, penguins and more!

I am not saying this version will come any closer to completion. At least now, you know I do think about sewing and smocking even if I am not writing about it!

Not sure whether I hope to hear I am in good company, or sad to think we are all too busy to sit and stitch.

Not Your Usual Candy Corn

Candy Corn.

You either love it, or hate it!

This year, I spied Blackberry Cobbler Candy Corn on the grocery store aisle. As a lover of real blackberry cobbler, I have to admit this doesn't taste anything like it. But, it is kind of tasty in its own sweet and sugary way.

Then there were these: Pumpkin Face Licorice Taffy.

The tiny faces made me smile.

Except for a small taste test, the treats were purchased to tuck into some little gifts.

Hope they bring a giggle to someone else, too!

Canstruction Again

Some of you may remember this post from last year, when I shared photos of Canstruction, the most unique food drive in the world. The local competition is sponsored by the Society for Design Admininstration, and is currently on exhibit at NorthPark Center.

Recently, I was in the area on business, and took a few minutes to tour this year's event.

Dallas architects and engineers come together to build sculptures, using only cans, boxes and bags of non-perishable food.

At the close of the exhibit, all cans, boxes and bags of food will be donated to the North Texas Food Bank.

Once again, I was reminded how fortunate I am there are cans sitting on my pantry shelves, and fresh food waiting in my refrigerator.

There were 24 entries this year, so this is only a small sampling.

Sports were a popular theme -- and especially nods to Dallas pro teams.

This is a replica of the Larry O'Brien NBA Championship Trophy won this year by the Dallas Mavericks.

Social media was also represented, as seen in this two-sided FaceBook entry.

An eery coincidence were entries depicting iPods, iPads and iPhones. There is no way the creators of those sculptures could have predicted the recent passing of Apple co-founder, Steve Jobs.

Designing of the sculptures began months ago, with build-out and installation occurring a week prior to his untimely death. Unfortunately, those sculptures were in locations difficult to photograph due to sunlight and other mall activities.

It took me awhile to figure out exactly what this sculpture represented.

Can you guess?

The title was E-luminating. Even with that hint, I was a little puzzled!

It depicts an energy efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs.

Can you tell I still prefer the old-fashioned type?

So, that's a quick tour of this year's Canstruction!

Sorry for a few blurry pictures. I truly was zipping through the mall. Fast and furious seems to be the theme of my life lately. The days are flying past. I am busy, but that to-do-list does not seem to disappear! Moments to sew have been few and far between.

This weekend, we will be attending a memorial service for a sweet friend. Monday will bring another funeral service for an elderly family member. It makes me want to hang onto each day a little longer, and squeeze as much as possible into each one.

May your weekend be filled with joyful moments, crisp autumn smells and flavors, and victory for your favorite football --and baseball -- teams!

Cleaning Closets

I have been a woman on a mission of late.

I admit that my kitchen has always had one drawer dedicated to odds and ends. By the end of the week, the island usually sports a stack of unsorted mail and unread newspapers.

I also have to admit that I really fell behind the last few years, with some of my normal housekeeping and seasonal routines. Opening and owning a store, undergoing and recovering from several major surgeries, and a few other assorted life happenings took priority.

Turning our son's room into a work space for me, recently led to other clearing, cleaning and reorganizing throughout the entire house. We have taken loads to a recycling center, made donations to non-profit groups, participated in a community-wide garage sale, and consigned items. It left little time for blogging, reading blogs, or stitching.

It felt good to clean and clear out some items.

Others were a little more difficult.

As the weather cooled and we began to pull out warmer clothing, we discovered some unwelcome guests evidently shared our good taste in clothing.

Fortunately, the damage seems contained only to our master bedroom closet.

Unfortunately, much of it occurred in a small cedar closet built inside our large walk-in closet.

I am also wondering why I even bother to pay for very expensive quarterly visits from the exterminator.

During the emptying and cleaning of the entire contents of our master closet, I did determine one thing. If I live to be 100, I need never buy another black or white t-shirt. That applies to both long sleeved and short sleeved versions, as well as v-neck and crew neck. However, I bet next time I want to wear one, I still won't be able to find one. They seem to have a knack of disappearing only when I want to wear one.

Due to the great closet clean out, I am now behind on many other tasks. There are still other areas in need of cleaning and reorganizing.

Hope to be back to normal routines soon. I mostly hope that all of your favorite sweaters are intact this fall!

A Record Broken

For 31 years, all summers have been compared to the summer of 1980.

It was the hottest on record with 69 days of temperatures over 100 degrees.

Yesterday, the mercury rose to 107 degrees and a new record was set.

We were all too hot and exhausted to care or celebrate.

The first 100 degree day of the year was recorded on June 13.

Each and every day in July was 100 degrees or more.

Last month, the temperatures fell for a couple of days. With that, we failed to break the record for the number of consecutive days of 100 degrees. The summer of 1980 will continue to hold that record.

We could easily reach 100 degrees again today, and then cooler temperatures are supposedly on the way.

However, concerns still remain.

The summer brought not only record temperatures, but record drought.

Everything everywhere is dry.

I drove through residual smoke from fires in East Texas on my way to Market.

On the return trip, I drove past still smoldering grass and pine trees just inside the Texas state line.

Yesterday, large fires broke out in nearby counties.

I have given up trying to keep landscape plants alive. Even with city enforced watering restrictions, our water bill is more than double its normal summer amount. I won't even discuss the air conditioning bill.

At least we still have a house to cool. Thousands of homes in nearby areas, and other parts of Texas, have gone up in flames. Residents have lost everything, and even a few lives have been lost.

When the rains finally come, maybe then there will be cause for celebration.

It seems I turned this page only a couple of days ago.

We are now one-third of the way through the month!

How did that happen?

I have been busier than ever, accomplished much, but still have lots to do on my list!

My desk and other furniture has been retrieved from storage.

Photographs are being hung.

Accessories are being placed here and there --

soon to be overflowing with paperwork!

I am off for a few days to the Creative Needle Arts Market in Birmingham.

Due to illness and surgeries, I have not attended this market for awhile. I am eager to reconnect with special friends, and be inspired once again.

I will be having a wonderful weekend, and hope you do, too!

I completely forgot to share this little outfit earlier this summer!

I did post it on a sewing forum to which I belong, so it may look familiar to some.

It has been a busy week, and the only sewing I accomplished was in my dreams.

So, I decided to go back in time and share something that I did actually stitch!

The pattern is Ruffled Neckline Top or Dress from Whimsy Couture.

It is a pdf pattern and may be purchased here

The recipient was a very busy little lady, crawling here and there.

So, I also made a pair of coordinating bloomers.

This is a cute pattern, and a breeze to construct!

I did think it ran a little slim, especially for active little diaper-bottoms. Shortened to top length, and worn with bloomers, seemed to work best in the smaller sizes.

Melissa has made several sweet versions for her darling daughters. The most recent was worn on the first day of school.

I did make one change to the construction.

The pattern instructs to narrow hem the armhole edges, and then stitch the side seams. That leaves the seam allowances exposed, and just kind of hanging out there!

I stitched my side seams first, using a tiny French seam. It gives a nice and neatly finished appearance to the inside of the garment.

Using a bias strip of the gingham, I faced the armholes. This provides one smoothly finished edge around the entire armhole. I also love the little dressmaking touch it adds!

The ruffled neckline frames sweet faces, and is a really fun little outfit!

Seventeen years ago today, I held my mother's hand for the last time and whispered a final farewell.

I miss her so much.

She always knew what was on my mind and in my heart, even when no words were spoken.

But, it is the hugs and her gentle touch that I miss most.

Someday we will hug again, and never have to let go.

I love you this much and more, Mother.

Squint and Use Your Imagination!

A week, a month and a season all gone in the blink of an eye!

I have been busy. Not necessarily anything to really merit blogging or photographing. Just very busy!

I did manage to carve out some time the past two days for a little sewing.

The Mother Huddle

One day, while blog hopping, I ran across these cute fabric hanging bags at The Mother Huddle.

I originally planned on making some for my sewing room, but that never happened!

As mentioned in an earlier post, I am turning our son's bedroom into a work space. I decided some fabric bags would not only help with organization, but also add a fun punch of color.

To my stash I scurried, and found several fabrics that worked well in the room.

A few were leftover from previous home decor projects, but many were from days when I made fabric tote bags. I even had enough craft weight fusible interfacing on hand for all four bags! My only expense was the cafe rod, on which to hang them.

The only thing better than getting organized, is making a very small dent in my fabric stash!

I am still waiting to have my desk, lateral file and bookcase moved from storage.

So, I am not able to hang my cute little bags.

The front stairwell served as an impromptu photography setting. This is where you need to squint and use your imagination! I think they will look much better once they are properly installed.

They were very fun and easy to make.

After making many bags over the years, I do have one tip.

While instructions often indicate that both outer and inner fabrics should be cut and seamed the same, I find that often does not work.

I may cut the two pieces the same size, but I usually use a slightly larger seam allowance when stitching the side seams of the lining. It then fits more snugly inside the bag, leading to a more crisp and finished look overall.

more hours in the day,

but only if they can be used for pleasure!

After that truck pulled out of our driveway,

I said a few prayers, dried a few silly tears, and headed upstairs with one goal in mind --

to turn my son's bedroom into a workspace for yours truly!

Since moving my business to our home, I desperately need an area dedicated solely to the massive amount of necessary paperwork and files.

I made amends with my Dyson, and can happily report there were no broken bones during all the vacuuming that ensued!

I admit to not being a perfect mother.

I love my son more than life itself, but he is not always the perfect child.

However, there was a great sense of calm and pride when I knew there would not be any surprises or disappointments as the contents of his room were sorted, packed away or disposed.

Instead, there were smiles, lots of memories, and even a few heart touching moments and silly tears again.

The bed and dresser will remain. He may return for the occasional holiday or event, and need a place to lay his weary head.

His desk, bookcases and a few other assorted pieces of furniture have been removed.

All books, video and computer games, electronic gadgets and gizmos, and sports paraphernalia are gone!

My office furniture will soon be retrieved from storage and set in place.

I am attempting to add a few feminine touches, without making it too uncomfortable for him during any short trips home.

The walls are already a creamy yellow. I loved these drapery panels, currently on sale at Pottery Barn! They have a wonderful texture and weight, with a design reminiscent of 18th century French textiles. Maybe more for sentimental than economical reasons, I am leaving the blue plaid duvet cover. It rarely saw the light of day! Boys, or at least my son, do not seem to comprehend that closets and dressers serve a purpose. The duvet cover was normally buried under an avalanche of clothes.

The pillows were purchased during a fun run to Ikea yesterday! I rewarded myself for slaving away, and took a much needed break. It had been way too long since I strolled through our local store. Susan, at Between Naps on the Porch, recently posted about her first venture to Ikea. She also purchased these same pillows. When I saw them, they were exactly what I was envisioning for the room. I wanted a pop of red, and these also pull the gold of the drapes and the blue of the duvet cover all together. I also love that the design is embroidered, adding more texture to the overall scheme.

I am more a lover of the eclectic look, and not the perfectly polished and matchy matchy look.

Hopefully, this will be a room that evolves. One where I can work while being surrounded with fond and happy memories of a boy now grown.

About those extra hours needed . .

These have been patiently waiting to be turned into all kinds of cute little things!

It seems some of my best design thoughts come when there is no time to sew.

Hoping I find those extra hours soon.

The Next Chapter

For the past couple of days, this has been parked in our driveway.

Early this morning, I stood in the driveway and watched it disappear down the street

carrying our son and most of his possessions.

He is beginning the next chapter of his life.

I know it is so cliche to say it seems like only yesterday.
Yet, it really does not seem that long ago this time of year simply meant purchasing a new blanket for rest time at preschool.

Then, there were the years of buying boxes of fresh crayons and markers for kindergarten and elementary school.

He was responsible for making sure the backpack was filled with all the necessary supplies for those first day of classes during high school.

Preparation for college wasn't exactly fun for him, but I was in my glory --

shopping for sheets, towels, comforters and all those nifty storage bins and organizing gizmos and gadgets.

For the next four years, I loved strolling the aisles of favorite stores, selecting special surprises, combining them with homebaked treats, and shipping them off to remind him that he was loved and missed.

Those four years at Wake Forest University were probably his best. I saw him flourish and come into his own. He reveled in a campus rich with tradition. He loved his classes and all that he learned. He made friendships to last a lifetime.

He decided to return to Texas after graduation. The last four years have not been the best.

The economy and job market have been tough.

He never found the perfect job or what made his heart sing.

During the last year, his father and I began to sense that change was in the air.

A couple of months ago, the lease on his apartment ended. He moved home to save money.

I became used to having him here.

His beloved Schnauzer became accustomed to more head scratches and being coaxed to jump on furniture when Mom was not looking.

Now, the house will be quiet again.

Groceries will last longer, thumps and bumps upstairs will cease, and music will not play into the wee hours of the morning. I will be the one curling up with the dog, as we try not to miss him too much.

His kindergarten teacher always referred to him as a little sponge. He soaked up all that he could learn, and was always eager to learn more.

He will be a sponge again.

On Monday, he becomes a first year law student at Vanderbilt University in Nashville.

Of all his choices, I am actually quite pleased with this selection. I know and love the city. He will be closer to other family members in Tennessee. He will also be closer to some of those friends from Wake.

It is the first time that I have not known where he is residing, or with whom he is living. When he calls or emails, I cannot picture in my mind where he is.

He is taking a huge leap of faith, and I must make that leap with him.

For years, he said he did not want to be like his parents. We grew up in a different time. We just do not understand. We march to a different drummer.

We will next see him in October when we attend his father's 30 year law class reunion at Vanderbilt.

Guess being a little like dear old dad is not so bad afterall!

Best of luck to everyone, little or big, heading off to new educational experiences.

Thank you for all the healing wishes and thoughts for my foot. I am still limping along, but without quite as much pain. It also gave me permission to just supervise the loading of that truck, and not participate in the heavy lifting!

Me and Peas

Remember last summer when I was bonding with packages of frozen peas?

Unfortunately, I am doing it again!

Thank goodness, it is not my eyes this time.

Wish I could say that I was doing something fun, or on some grand adventure.

Instead, it was just me, my Dyson vacuum, and a complete lack of grace and coordination.

I now have a lovely black, blue and broken toe!

The good news?

We are experiencing record breaking temperatures, and it is predicted to only worsen.

Meanwhile, I am chillin' with my frozen peas!

So, if I am quiet for a few days, that is why.

I am hopeful this will provide some quiet time to sit and stitch!

Hope all of you are staying cool -- but minus any painful injuries.

Where I Sew

My friend, Southern Matriarch, reminded me there were only a few days left to add our sewing spaces to the inspiring tour over at Pink Chalk Studio. I have really enjoyed peeking into the creative spots of fellow bloggers and stitchers. I also had good intentions of cleaning up my own sewing room and sharing it.

Well, the month is almost over and there has not been a lot of cleaning or photographing going on in my little corner of the sewing world!

Instead, I will share some photographs taken a few years ago. My room remains pretty much the same, as far as furniture and fixtures. There is just more fabric, stacks of books, magazines, patterns, and unfinished projects.

Please tell me you can relate!

The photograph above is the door to my sewing room.

So, come on in!

It was important to have not only a space for sewing, but also a place where I could surround myself with the things I love. Many are items which once belonged to family members and friends. They hold a special place in my heart. Maybe in future entries, I will share some of their stories in more detail.

The settee is covered with a family quilt. There is a shawl, crocheted by my mother, which comes in handy during cool weather. The cutwork pillowcase was made by my grandmother Bessie. The basket-turned-coffee table is topped with a silver tray that belonged to my mother-in-law.

Photographs and other favorite belongings are displayed on the shelf, along with some of my mother's hats which I shared in an earlier entry here.

The mahogany bookshelf, to the right, was purchased by my parents for their first home.

This Elfa drawer unit provides much needed storage and work area.

I have since made a black and white gingham skirt which hides the drawers.

The drawers hold sewing notions and patterns.

I keep my lace shaping board and iron here for quick pressing jobs, while sewing.

The stool was used by my father in his garage workshop.

I do not sit there much, as it usually is piled with various magazines or pieces of current projects!

My sewing table is also constructed with Elfa components.

I made the window valances and covered a bulletin board with black and white toile fabric.

The Swiss cuckoo clock was purchased by my mother on one of the last overseas jaunts she and Daddy were able to take. It always provided entertainment for the grandchildren when they visited the grandparents.

It just makes me smile!

My sewing chair is not fancy schmancy.

It is probably terrible for my back and legs.

It is very special, though.

This was the chair that always sat at my grandmother's sewing machine.

I painted it black to better coordinate with my room. I also adorned it with some of the larger vintage mother of pearl buttons from her collection. There are also mother of pearl buttons hot glued to the bottom of the black hanging shelf. I love to see them when I sit and sew.

Do not fret all ye lovers of mother of pearl buttons!

These that met their fate with the hot glue gun were not ones I would have sewn on sweet little heirloom gowns or frocks!

Prior to building our current home, we spent twelve years living in and restoring a home in one of the city's historic districts. As with most older homes, closet space was non-existent.

We purchased this antique armoire to help store out-of-season clothing.

For some reason, neither my husband nor myself could muster the courage to leave it behind or sell it when we moved. So, it came to live in my sewing room! It does provide wonderful storage, but it takes up the majority of the room.

There are three sections. Behind the door on the left, is a space for hanging clothes. The larger center section contains shelves and drawers. The right section has flat pullout drawers.

It comes apart in numerous pieces for moving. Our movers were not thrilled with putting all the puzzle pieces back together again!

The small pictures to the right of the armoire once hung in my mother's childhood bedroom.

They are silhouettes of children at play painted in reverse on glass.

This is the armoire section with the flat pullout drawers.

I have since removed many of my finer fabrics from this section. I discovered some were becoming stained if they came in contact with the wood. I always kept the shelves lined with paper, but the fabric folds sometimes touched the sides of the armoire.

And this is the section with space for hanging clothes.

I upholstered the interior of this space with the same toile fabric used elsewhere in the room.

I also covered the inside of the door with a roll of cork, creating another space to tack notes and information.

So, that is my little corner of the world!

I think these photographs have inspired me to try and return it to this state of cleanliness!

It Started with Bunny Slippers

These bunny slippers!

Aren't they uber cute?

They even have fluffy bunny tails!

How could I resist?

You may remember that last year, I made and donated a nightgown and little outfit to be used in a hospital fundraiser. This year, I volunteered again to make something.

I just happened to spy these sweet slippers shortly afterwards, and decided they would become a part of my donation. My original thought was a pair of pajamas and matching robe.

Now, comes the part when I have to admit to procrastinating, not finding a suitable pattern, and a deadline quickly approaching!

So, I turned to the trusty pattern used for last year's nightie.

Inspired by the Old Fashioned Baby Retreat slip dress that I am still working on, I incorporated many of those design details.

I omitted the sleeves from the pattern and added Swiss insertion and French lace edging to the bodice.

At the seamline of the skirt and bodice, I used large entredeux beading that I borrowed from a well aged and unfinished class project kit. This nightgown needed to be completed, and I knew that class project would most likely remain in the basket of UFO's for a very long time.

Sweet pink and white gingham ribbon was threaded through the entredeux and tied in a bow --

because we all know a bow makes everything better!

While bows and long ties might not be a wise choice on a nightie for a real live little doll, I figured this dolly was not likely to encounter any harm.

The hem is finished with folded tucks and Swiss edging.

Last, but definitely not least . . .

bunny slippers!

Wooly bunny slippers may not be the normal choice for a delicate summer nightgown.

Let's just overlook that small detail, okey dokey?

What I Did this Weekend

I wove blue floss through the Swiss entredeux edging on the skirt from the Old Fashioned Baby sewing retreat.

I began embroidering the hemline of the skirt, too.

Jeannie used featherstitching on her dress. I have substituted stem stitch.

Featherstitching on curves is not my strength, and I really enjoy doing this stitch!

We fired up the grill. After the hot dogs and chicken, came the best part --

S'mores!

We watched some of these, which were much prettier than my picture taking skills portray!

One Week. One Year.

It's been one week since I headed off to Louisiana and the Old Fashioned Baby Sewing and Spiritual Retreat. I must still be on vacation mode. Not much has been accomplished since my return!

My project is still in pieces: a sweet yoke embellished with yummy Swiss embroidery, French lace and tucks, and a skirt embellished with more tucks and Swiss edging. The end result will be a darling little slip dress with delicate embroidery above the skirt's tucks.

It will be finished someday soon, I promise!

The retreat was three blissful days of fun, friends, fellowship and stitching!

Jeannie and Belinda did a fantastic job of spoiling each and every one of us. These are just a few of the special favors and mementos.

There was also time for Bible study, a renewal and strengthening of faith and spirit.

It could not come at a more appropriate time for me.

It was one year ago today that I underwent the first of three eye surgeries.

I try very hard to put this all behind and forge ahead. I do not want to dwell on the past.

However, it has been on my mind so much as this anniversary approached.

I want to forget the anger, fear and pain.

I want to open my eyes each morning and not be afraid.

I am not sure that will ever happen.

There is so much goodness I want to always remember.

I never want to forget how I was held in the strong and loving arms of a great God.

I never want to forget how so many of you reached out to me and my family, surrounded us with your prayers, and carried us when we stumbled in our faith and hope.

I still miss my contact lenses!

I still hate to wear glasses.

I am so thankful for the vision I have.

I am becoming used to dark dancing blobs, and don't try to chase as many imaginary creatures darting across the floor, or swat as many fantasy flies.

Artificial tears have become my constant companion, as has smudged mascara!

All in all, I am blessed.

Each of you are part of that blessing.

The following verse became one of my favorites this past year. It was also one read this past weekend.

Coincidence?

My Bags are Packed

Sewing supplies are stowed in a favorite tote.

Jammies and clothes are in my trusty carpet bag.

I am ready to go!

Something old, something new . . .

Something borrowed, something blue

Once, it seemed that June was the month for weddings.

Now, the other eleven months of the year are almost as popular. We will be attending no June weddings this year, but there are several planned for later in the summer.

It also seems many of the long time traditions are giving way to newer traditions.

During some recent cleaning and reorganizing of my sewing room, I discoverd this garter made several years ago.

Many of the recent weddings I have attended, do not include the traditional tossing of the garter.

Since I love ribbon, lace and traditions, there is still a place in my heart for the traditional wedding garter -- even if it is not tossed.

It can simply be something kept, as a reminder of a joyful day.

This particular garter was created with white French laces and ecru silk satin ribbon.

I usually make the elastic casing out of lace, also. It looks as pretty from the inside, as the outside!

A knotted rosette embellishes the front.

A knotted rosette or frou-frou is made by tying loose knots at equal increments along a length of narrow ribbon. The ribbon is then gathered and tied into a rosette. These types of rosettes are also seen on baby bonnets and other types of heirloom clothing.

Magnolias for Karen

A few weeks ago, I mentioned my magnolia tree and a special story behind it.

We once lived in a neighborhood with a wonderful tradition.

Each Spring, magnolia trees were presented to residents who had welcomed a new addition or bid farewell to a family member during the previous twelve months.

In the Spring of 1998, I received a tree in memory of my sister Karen.

Karen was my only sibling, and two years older.

She was the typical big sister, always teasing me, telling me what to do, and how to do it.

She was always pretty as a picture!

We stood by each other's side as vows were repeated.

We became mothers and watched our children grow.

We were very much alike in some ways, and very different in others.

Those differences became very real as we dealt with and grieved our mother's death from cancer.

Two years later, Karen's diagnosis with cancer would bring us full circle.

We both swallowed our pride and buried our bitterness and differences.

I was by her side when she left us to join Mother.

Only eight months had passed since we first learned of her cancer.

I could not believe that we would not grow old together.

In the months that followed her death, we placed our home on the market and made plans to move to a different part of the metroplex. The magnolia tree remained in its container and followed us.

It now is planted in our front yard -- a reminder of a special neighborhood and a special sister.

Today would have been her 59th birthday.

I miss her more now than that day we said farewell.

Happy Birthday, Karen!

Simple Summer Sewing

Yes, I do still remember where my sewing room is. I even managed to remember how to thread the machine! I am sure it was beginning to wonder if it would ever be used again.

It seemed wise to begin with something rather simple. To make it even more simple, a pattern that I have used previously.

The top is cut in one piece. Cannot get much more simple!

The pocket is gathered with elastic across the top, creating a tiny ruffle.

The cutest part is in the back, with bloomers peeking out!

Even more cute, would have been some ruffles across the back of those bloomers. Need to remember that for next time.

Now, that I have one completed project under my belt, maybe I am finally ready to tackle a few more.

It felt good to be back in the sewing room!

We seem to have already settled into sweltering summer temperatures. My days of playing outside may be over. Hopefully, that means there will be more time for playing in my sewing room!

Sweet Summer Fruit

The heat, humidity and high cooling bills are a few things I do not like about summer.

The abundance of sweet fresh fruit is one of the delights!

Last week's plans included joining friends for an evening of discussion and nibbling.

I was all set to take a plate of strawberries, cantaloupe and blackberries, dressed up with a sweet dip on the side.

Unfortunately, our local skies and weather had something else in mind.

The storm warnings and wailing sirens had me heading toward the closet for shelter, instead.

We survived the storms just fine, and I enjoyed all the lovely fruit myself!

The dip is a variation on a strawberry dessert that I often served for brunch.

I discovered it is just as delicious with other types of fresh fruit. For ease in serving, fruit kabobs can be made using small skewers, or small picks can be used for dipping pieces of fruit.

For me and my leftover fruit, a bowl and spoon was just fine!

I did sprinkle a little brown sugar on the fruit pictured, but that step can be skipped when the fruit is being skewered and dipped.

Rose Hill Strawberries

8 oz sour cream

1/4 cup maple syrup

3 pints whole strawberries, washed and hulled

2-1/2 tablespoons firmly packed brown sugar

Combine sour cream and maple syrup, cover, and refrigerate at least 1 hour.

Arrange strawberries in 8 dessert bowls. Sprinkle brown sugar evenly over strawberries and chill.

Pour sour cream mixture over strawberries and serve.

Twenty six years ago today, I became a mother.

I looked into those sweet eyes and saw a glimpse of God.

I never knew such love, such hope, such worry, such frustration, and such fear,

until I became a parent.

My son has no doubt taught me more, than I have taught him.

Twenty six years has not been enough time to do all we dreamed or planned.

But he has grown into a son that makes his parents so very proud.

It has been a comfort to have him nearby in recent years.

He was here to help and comfort through the difficult days of illness and surgery.

Yet, no mother should ever experience that type of worry and fear in the eyes of her child.

Soon, he will be moving several states away to begin another chapter of his life.

Nothing makes me happier than to see him so happy -- even though I will miss him very, very much.

The timing was perfect, and one of the best birthday gifts he could receive.

His birth, those twenty six years ago, was the best gift I ever received.

Watching the Magnolia Bloom

Gee, it has been a little quiet around here lately!

Somewhere in all those boxes I was unpacking last month, I also seemed to unpack a severe case of the blahs. Hopefully, better days are ahead.

About the only thing I have been doing is watching my magnolia tree bloom.

I love magnolia blooms!

The ones from this tree are very dear and special.

Maybe one day, I will share the story behind this special tree.

The tree is now about thirteen years old.

Each year, I anxiously wait to see if it will bloom.

For the first several years, there was nary a bloom.

The last few years, there have been maybe two or three blooms each Spring.

For unknown reasons, there are now at least twenty four blooms!

I have been bringing some inside and floating them in water.

Their intoxicating scent fill my house.

I am loving them, and they are definitely helping to chase away those pesky blahs.

This is a magnolia bloom created with ribbon and tiny glass seed beads.

It was a project one year at Stitchin' Charleston Style, taught by Laura Jenkins Thompson.

There are folded ribbon roses on the other side, and the whole bouquet was to adorn a black silk evening bag. A few years ago, I removed the cluster from the purse and nestled it in a bow on a hat worn to a Kentucky Derby party. I loved them so much on the hat, they never found their way back to the purse!

And here is one more form of magnolia bloom found in our home.

It is a piece of Boehm porcelain, with a special link to the tree that I am watching bloom in our yard!

All part of a special time and people in my life.

And to my friends in Mississippi and Louisiana, where magnolias are usually in great abundance, my prayers and thoughts are with you. May each of you stay safe from the danger and destruction of floodwaters.

Storms, Salad and Friends

Much of yesterday was spent with an eye on the sky, and an ear tuned to weather forecasts.

Seems like we are doing a lot of that these days.

Finally, the sun began to peek through and the clouds cleared.

I quickly threw together a salad, and scurried off to enjoy a monthly gathering with friends.

I started with a package of spring mix salad greens, to which I added a package of baby spinach leaves. Tossed in a handful of dried cranberries, and a can of drained mandarin oranges.

Next, was some yummy crumbled feta cheese.

I was planning on toasting some pecans or almonds, for a little crunch. With time short, I was not sure the nuts would cool sufficiently before being added to the greens.

Instead, I happened to have a package of these.

A few sprinkled on top was perfect!

I made a salad dressing from this Junior League of Birmingham cookbook.

Guess it was a good thing to snap that photograph before serving.

I returned with an empty bowl!

Red Wine Vinaigrette

1/2 cup vegetable oil

1/2 cup sugar

3 tablespoons red wine vinegar

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon pepper

Combine ingredients in a jar with tight-fitting lid and shake to blend. Chill in freezer for 10 minutes or in the refrigerator for 30 minutes.

Add dressing to salad, mix well.

Serve immediately.

This does make a sweet dressing, and I might reduce the amount of sugar next time -- or maybe not!

I just wish I had some of the salad for lunch today.

There could be more storms this afternoon, so guess I better go check that sky!

Easter Memories

Between packing, unpacking and a few other activities in our home and lives, Easter seems to have sneaked up on me. Only a few days ago, I managed to bring out the Easter Egg tree, and surround it with my mother-in-law's much loved Herend bunny collection.

But the much loved sugar eggs from my mother, which I shared here last year, remain safely snuggled in their boxes. As do the needlepoint bunnies, also shared here last year, and many other favorite Easter decorations.

I know in my heart that Easter is not about the chocolate bunnies, brightly painted eggs, and cute baskets overflowing with colorful paper grass.

But, if I am to be perfectly honest, I do miss seeing all those things around my house this year.

So, I am thinking of Easters past, when those and much more were in great abundance.

My first Easter as a mother.

The thrill of the hunt!

For me, the search for the perfect little appliqued outfit and miniature top siders.

For him, that special egg!

The annual neighborhood Easter Egg Hunt, and a sugar induced high that lasted all afternoon.

No nap for him. I was the one who needed it more!

Family.

Dearly departed, but never forgotten, family.

Brunch at Memphis Country Club.

I can still taste the cheese blintz with raspberries!

Real bunnies with whiskers that tickle!

No, these are not the things of which Easter really is.

Or, are they in some small way?

Because of a greater love, I have all these blessings.

A tiny hand was placed in mine, and I put my faith in His hands to guide us both, through hunts for hidden eggs and other adventures in life.

The holiday brought family and friends together. Work and worries ceased for the moment.

There were smiles, hugs and happiness.

There are now special memories etched forever into our hearts and minds.

There is the promise of eternal life, and the glorious reunion with those we miss even more when we gaze at sugar eggs and beloved bunny collections.

I believe that God speaks to us in so many different ways, and holidays can be celebrated and savored in just as many ways, too.

And sometimes, we just all need to indulge in the simple and silly things that make us smile!

If you choose to celebrate Easter,

may you be abundantly blessed as you prepare your home and heart for this sacred day.

Southern Cooking and Reading

I own more cookbooks than I will ever possibly use.

However, that does not stop me from purchasing more.

My latest purchase is A Southerly Course, Recipes & Stories Close to Home by Martha Hall Foose.

This is her second cookbook. Her first, Screen Doors and Sweet Tea, also resides in my kitchen and has actually been used!

For those of us in the smocking and heirloom world, these are more than just cookbooks by some unknown author. Martha's mother, Cindy, is a well known and much loved teacher of sewing and smocking.

Creative Needle, November/December 1999

Her beautiful designs often graced the pages of Creative Needle.

Students in Cindy's classes were not only treated to her vast knowledge of sewing techniques, but also her talent as a great storyteller. Her daughter inherited that same skill.

Martha's latest cookbook is filled with mouth watering recipes, and tales of her life in the South.

The book is also full of wonderful photographs.

Many are all about the food,

and very much drool worthy!

It is obvious much thought and care went into each photograph.

No detail was too small.

For instance, this photograph of Grilled Frog Legs is presented by a lovely lady wearing what?

A frog printed housedress, of course!

Such humorous and endearing details are sprinkled throughout the pages.

I am not sure the recipe for frog legs will be the first thing I try.

Chocolate Chiffon Pie may win that honor!

Yum, yum, yum.

The photographs are not only about food,

but also heartwarming illustrations of Martha and her family's life in the Mississippi Delta.

Martha's knack for combining food and tales make this more than just your average cookbook.

I recently shared with a group of friends an article about Martha from the current issue of Garden & Gun. Many were not famliar with this magazine about life in the South.

I would not have known about it either, except a very sweet customer told me about it last year. It has now become one of my favorite magazines.

April Showers

It is definitely Spring in Texas!

That means the weather can change in seconds. It brings not only gentle showers, but thunder, lightening and destructive winds.

Our week started like that.

A night where you are not sure whether to try and sleep, or stay up with the local television weatherman.

Fortunately, our immediate area received no damage.

Instead, I am enjoying beautiful blooms on one of my antique rose bushes!

Hope everyone else is staying safe from storms and flooding.

I am taking a break from unpacking and organizing to have lunch with a friend today.

May there be friends, laughter and sunshine in your day, too!

Spring vs Sinus

The Good Lord knew to bless Spring with awesome blooms in beautiful colors, under sunny skies.

It makes the accompanying allergy and sinus problems a tad more tolerable!

Now, if I could only unravel the mystery behind moving boxes.

Why is it for every one that is unpacked, two or three more always appear?

I am slowly making process, though.

Thank you for the many kind and encouraging messages regarding the recent closing of my brick and mortar store. They mean the world to me, and have made this transition a little easier.

During the past eighteen months, my time at the store was limited due to health issues, medical appointments, and surgeries. However, even when a business owner is not physically present at their business, they are still very much consumed by it.

I am enjoying a more relaxed schedule, and know my health will ultimately benefit from it.

There are still orders to fill and customers to help.

I continue to be grateful for the opportunity to help others keep stitching and creating, through my website.

I am also still planning to spend more time in my own sewing room, once that last box is unpacked, if not sooner!

One thing I often regretted as a business owner, was not having time to support other businesses -- especially other small local businesses.

As I have made daily runs to the Post Office with orders, I have also made time to reacquaint myself with other stores in my neighborhood.

While not a small or locally owned business, I did enjoy browsing through the nearest location of World Market the other day. A few of the double insulated tumblers followed me home.

I plan on spending many sunny summer days sipping something delightfully cool and fruity!

May your weekend be filled with Spring goodness, and not too much pollen or too many sneezes!.

Packed!

The bolts of fabric are packed, and shelves are empty.

Display cases, once full of gifts, are bare.

A wall of notions is no more.

I am sore, with bruises all over.

Now, I get to start unpacking it all!

If you don't hear from me again for awhile, I have crawled inside an empty box and am taking a little nap.
